On October 16, 1968, John Carlos and Tommie Smith raised their black gloved fists high, with
Australian medalist Peter Norman to stand in solidarity and to create an image for the ages.
This medal-stand moment started the movement called the Olympic Project for Human Rights.
In 1968, the OPHR was able to remove an open bigot Avery Brundage as the head of the
International Olympic Committee. This put an end to the segregation of South America and
Rhodesia. It also hired more African-American coaches and it restored Muhammad Ali’s boxing.
The citizens of Mexico City where the olímpica were being held at, had protesting. The citizens did not want the olímpicos to be held there. They staid it was a waste of money. Then a massacre occurred, killing over 300 college students. The athletes such as Tommie and John payed a tribute when they won their medals on the podium.
